BCHPCA Board of Directors

Wendy Pratt
Past-President

Executive Director, Nanaimo Hospice Society

BCHPCA member since 1996.

I first got involved in the field of Hospice Palliative Care when.....
I took the volunteer training at Abbotsford Hospice, sat on their board, and eventually became its Executive Director.

I stayed involved in the field of Hospice Palliative Care because...
From the first day of volunteer training I knew I was in the right place – this is the work I wanted to do – this is where I wanted to put my energies. I had found that something that would bring “meaning” to my work and make a difference in my community, in the ensuing years it has become my passion.

I am constantly inspired by the people I meet through HPC because....
They show a level of commitment to their work that I have not found elsewhere and because the work they do is at such a basic human level that it only attracts those who have a compelling desire to make a difference for individuals and families facing end of life issues. I have often said that one of the best things about my work is the people I get to work with.

To me, Quality End of Life Care means....
I think Cicely Saunders said it best: “Care of the heart combined with the best that medicine has to offer.”

If I could wave a magic wand and change one thing in this world it would be....
That we could all live in peace, respecting and honouring the incredible diversity that exists in the world.

The best thing about being on the BCHPCA Board of Directors is ....
An opportunity to see the bigger picture and feeling like I am part of something that is making a positive difference in our little part of the world, and working with intelligent and like minded people.

If I could plan my own Last Supper it would be:

The Setting: A large veranda, in a tropical setting, overlooking the water, with waving palms and mountains in the distance, on a balmy summer evening.

The Menu: Filet with blue cheese, salad (with romaine, strawberries, mandarin orange segments, red onions and toasted pecans with blue cheese; new potatoes with butter and green onions. White wine. Chocolate Mousse for dessert and a special coffee with mint and whipped cream.

The Music: Soft background music (piano and/or harp)

Prepared by: My two sons, my grandson, my sister, my Dad and one or two very close friends.

Extras? A walk on the beach at sunset and one last whale sighting in the distance.

“If I had my life to live over I would eat more ice cream”
